And this is happening more and more. My father is in a nursing home and I pay for the entire cost. Can I deduct these expenses on my tax return? And the yes, the answer is, if you’re paying for this person’s care and they can’t afford it themselves, then that person might be able to be your dependent and therefore their nursing is. If you or your spouse or your dependent is in nursing or primary care, then the entire nursing home cost, including meals and lodging, is deductible as a medical expense.
